Session Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the different psychological factors behind our collections.
  2. Learn ways to establish respectful and compassionate communication during downsizing.
  3. Learn decluttering and organizing strategies that are respectful of the person.

Life events often force people to examine their belongings in order to pare them down and organize them. In those moments people are often simultaneously surprised by the amount of stuff they have collected and feeling at odds about how to go about downsizing. In this session learn how to support someone who is facing the downsizing process in a respectful and compassionate way. The different psychological factors behind collections will be explored. Understanding the “why” behind the collections is an critical part of the calculus of downsizing and is an important element in shaping communications during the process. Different strategies to simplify the process and increase the likelihood of success will be covered. This session highlights that it’s not the things that are important; it is our relationship with the things that is important.
