In recent years there have been several legislative and regulatory changes shaping the way families are approaching their plan to age and receive care at home. As consumer-directed care has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the in-home care industry, experts anticipate a significant increase in the number of privately employed live-in caregivers.

Tom Breedlove, Sr. Director of Care.com HomePay, and David Petroski, Founder of Grandma Joan’s LLC, will share information Certified Senior Advisors need to know in order to advise clients who privately employ a caregiver, outside of a home-care agency setting, with a special focus on live-in care.

The session will present cost, compliance and quality control measures influencing live-in cases as David and Tom will discuss the practical, financial and legal implications of full-time care at home. By understanding the legal risks and compliance obligations as well as patient benefits associated with first-party live-in caregiver employment, audience members will be better prepared to successfully guide their clients and avoid common pitfalls.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand when live-in care is a viable option for clients, and when it is not
  • Identify key legislation and trends driving household employment
  • Learn how to mitigate tax, insurance and labor law risks of private employment
  • Gain access to free tools and resources that can add value to your practice

Tom Breedlove is the Senior Director of Business Development at Care.com HomePay, the nation's leading household employment payroll and tax specialists. Co-author of The Household Employer’s Financial, Legal & HR Guide, Tom has led the firm’s education and outreach efforts on this complex topic.
