Inspired Independence: Designs for Senior Living

When polled, the number one fear seniors have is being placed in a nursing home, a fear
greater than death itself.

At the same time, 95% of builders report that seniors purchasing homes in 55+
communities are resistant to accessible features (design features that allow individuals
to create a living environment that is barrier‐free and adaptable where all people can
move freely, independently and safely.)

That led our practice, Larson Shores Architects, to more clearly define the need of
design around the aging population. After exploring the current options for the 55+ age
range, we discovered a major need for inspired design solutions that can support the
effects of aging and/or disability without looking institutional and hospital‐like. As a
result, we have launched a new division called Inspired Independence©.

Our presentation on Inspired Independence starts by giving the audience an overview
of current senior housing options. We also provide a snapshot of how many people are
affected by these options; for example today there are only 3 million units of senior
housing available for the roughly 39 million seniors – a number which continues to grow
exponentially on a daily basis.
