When single seniors choose to "age-in-place" do they get lonely? Sharing housing can be a realistic option for seniors of any age. This session will explore the barriers to shared housing, such as, ageism and fear. As well as, the opportunities to overcome those barriers with models and community examples. You will learn the twenty-one benefits of sharing housing, and leave with concrete steps to promote a solution in your practice.

  • • Name 3 different resources to support clients in seeking shared housing.


Annamarie Pluhar, M.Div. advocates for adults, especially older singles, to have a “home-mate” or someone they can share a home with for the benefits of cost, company, cooperation, and comfort. She is the author of Sharing Housing, A Guidebook for Finding and Keeping Good Housemates, designed to reduce the risks of shared housing by guiding the reader with a practical process, insights, and tips. Her website,, offers articles and resources to further promote the concept of sharing housing. Annamarie has 30-years’ experience in corporate and non-profit consulting, group facilitation, training development and delivery and is a graduate of Vassar College and The Episcopal Divinity School. She is also a guest blogger for Sixty and Me and Silvernest while living in Vermont with one two-legged and two four-legged housemates.
