Consumer-Directed Care: What CSA’s Need to Know

While household employment is often pigeonholed as a ‘nanny tax’ issue, private in-home senior care is one of the fastest-growing segments of the care industry.  Due to recent regulatory changes for in-home care, many families are considering first-party employment (direct hire) in order to save tens of thousands of dollars each year.  Especially true in high-hour cases where overtime is involved and care continuity is required (i.e. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive decline), new overtime costs have left millions of families struggling to juggle their care budget and searching for a more affordable in-home care solution.

The high cost of facility-based care coupled with the almost universal desire to age at home, makes in-home care an increasingly popular option for families  As demand for quality in-home care continues to skyrocket, Tom Breedlove, Director of HomePay, the country’s leading household employment specialist, will share information that Certified Senior Advisors needs to know in order to prepare for household employment questions, advise clients about risk management and help families save money - with a special focus on senior care.

Understandably, families may feel overwhelmed by all the household employer obligations. It’s a lot for a busy family to manage – which is why, if left to their own devices, most families will make mistakes and oversights that expose themselves to audits and wage disputes.  For CSA’s who advise, or anticipate advising, recipients of in-home care, stewardship and guidance will likely save clients a significant amount of money and frustration.  Session participants will leave with a better understanding of recent regulatory changes driving private employment, the employer issues that will likely come into play and information to help guide clients through the dramatic cost implications of long-term care.
