2019 Household Employment Tax and Labor Law Updates

When most financial professionals think of household employment, they think of state and federal tax calculations and employment tax filings.  However, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights legislation in a number of states as well as hundreds of state and municipal wage & hour law nuances, have made the labor law side of household employment arguably become more complex than the tax side.

There is no one size fits all solution to caring for our elderly population. Home care agencies, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities and skilled nursing facilities all have a role to play. And, now with the recent regulatory changes, privately-employed in-home care has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the care industry.     Without expert guidance, families with domestic workers (i.e. senior caregivers, personal assistants, housekeepers, etc.) will likely make a number of expensive, time-consuming mistakes.

Tom Breedlove, Director of Care.com HomePay, the country’s leading household employment specialist, will share information that Certified Senior Advisors needs to know in order to prepare for household employment questions, advise clients about risk management and help families save money - with a special focus on senior care.

For CSA’s who advise, or anticipate advising, recipients of in-home care, stewardship and guidance will likely save clients a significant amount of money and frustration.  Session participants will leave with a better understanding of national regulatory changes driving private employment, the employer issues that will likely come into play and information to help guide clients through the dramatic cost implications of long-term care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the implications of new laws/regulations on families with private in-home senior care
  2. Identify the key payroll, tax, labor law and insurance compliance issues
  3. Help families avoid risk and take advantage of tax breaks and non-taxable forms of compensation
