As professionals in the field working with the aging population, it is important to recognize the ethical issues that could arise. There is a variety of areas that ethical issues can emerge including complex family dynamics, end of life wishes, preserving dignity and respect, promoting independence, and keeping the individual safe. There are various factors that can make older adults vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and ill intent. Learning about these elements can assist us in understanding how to reduce the risk of harm, how to advocate for the older adult and how to report issues to the proper authorities when necessary.

About the Presenter

Lakelyn Eichenberger, PhD is Gerontologist and Caregiver Advocate for Home Instead Senior Care. Lakelyn works to educate professionals, families and communities on issues older adults face. She has a special passion for helping families navigate the challenges of dementia caregiving and connecting them with valuable resources. Lakelyn has an MBA, an MA in Gerontology and a doctorate in Gerontology from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
